4th September 2002: The Institute of Directors (IoD) in conjunction with Cisco Systems, Ltd., and Wireless Workplace Ltd becomes one of the first ‘hot spots’ in Central London, where business leaders will be able to use wireless technology (Wi-Fi). From today, IoD members will be able to obtain broadband internet access on their laptop computers while onsite at ‘IoD at 123’ on Pall Mall, via one of the first wireless networks in central London. This new service will provide significant benefits to members, enabling them to check email and access the web at very high speed without the inconvenience and cost of connecting via dial-up modems or mobile phones. The network uses the global standard known as “Wi-Fi” or 802.11b to connect member PCs equipped with a standard wireless PC card to a local “hotspot”. Ian Campbell, general manager of the IoD facility at 123 Pall Mall says: “We want our members to be able to come here and conduct business with ease. This means continually introducing facilities such as wireless technology. This is a great step forward and, what’s more, the service is free to our members.” The USA already has many wireless hot spots but the UK is just waking up to the possibilities. Establishing Wi-Fi adds to the leading-edge, entrepreneurial flair that you really feel when walking into the building.” Richard Bradley, operations director for commercial and small and medium business comments: “We are pleased to work with both the IoD and Wireless Workplace Ltd., on this wireless deployment. Wireless technology solutions are an invaluable way to enable businesses to stay connected and productive. “ Andrew Doe, managing director of Wireless Workplace Ltd comments: “We are delighted to provide this wireless network to the IoD. Its decision to install this facility for members reflects the tremendous interest we are seeing in wireless networking across the board. The IoD has demonstrated a really forward thinking strategy by setting up what is probably the first wireless ‘hotspot’ for public use.” The IEEE 802.11b or WiFi standard is well established.
The technology is inexpensive and offers significantly higher bandwidth
than cellular operators. Many companies are already using wireless networks
in their offices to enable staff to remain connected to the corporate
network even when away from their desks.” Note to Editors For further information, please contact: Andrew Doe, Managing Director Tel: 0870 754 3894 About Cisco Systems About wirelessworkplace™ Wirelessworkplace™ delivers real business benefit through wireless technologies such as Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) using 802.11b (Wi-Fi) and related standards and Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) based on Bluetooth technologies.
